Kohala Coast
Here are some great family-friendly hikes on the Kohala Coast – close to our vacation homes in Mauna Lani.
Keawaiki and A-Bay: This 7-mile coastal hike is great for exploring in smaller sections with kids. It is easily accessible from the Waikoloa Beach resort area by walking south of the Lava Lava Beach Club at Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay) Beach. If you access the hike from the north end at A-Bay, you can walk south for as long as you are comfortable before turning around. The trail goes past small hidden beaches and remote anchialine pools (freshwater-brackish pools with unique ecosystems). If you want a longer hike, you can do the entire 7-mile trail to Keawaiki Bay. Visit this website for more information about the trail.[/TS_VCSC_Advanced_Textblock][vc_single_image image=”8298″ img_size=”800×500″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gmaps link=”#E-8_aHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZtYXBzLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tJTJGbWFwcyUyRmFwaSUyRmpzJTNGdiUzRDMuMjclMjZjYWxsYmFjayUzRGF2aWFPbkdvb2dsZU1hcHNMb2FkZWQlMjZrZXklM0RBSXphU3lDQUduVGlYbVJQWGtiOHhxZVFSbFktVlNZSk1oVnF0eEU=”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][TS_VCSC_Advanced_Textblock styling_border=”border-style:solid;border-top-style:solid;border-right-style:solid;border-bottom-style:solid;border-left-style:solid;|border-width:1px;border-radius:0px;border-top-width:0px;border-top-left-radius:0px;border-right-width:0px;border-top-right-radius:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;border-bottom-right-radius:0px;border-left-width:0px;border-bottom-left-radius:0px;|border-color:#cccccc;border-top-color:#cccccc;border-right-color:#cccccc;border-bottom-color:#cccccc;border-left-color:#cccccc;”]
Kailua-Kona & Surrounding Area
Here are some great family-friendly hikes near Kailua-Kona.
Kaloko-Honokohau Park: This National Historical Park has a number of great trails that allow you to hike for as long or short a time as you want. This park features great coastal hikes to explore and places to splash around with the family. The Kaloko fishponds – historic ponds used for fish farming – is great area to explore with kids. You can access the fish ponds from “Trailhead 2” located at the end of a rough road (for more details, click here). Families with older kids can explore more of the trails and learn about Hawaiian culture by viewing petroglyphs, ruins of a Hawaiian heiau (temple), and other archaeological sites. This park has free admission.
Pu’uhonua o Honaunau Park: With a recreated Ancient Hawaiian village and beautiful shorelines, this National Historical Park is a great place to explore with the whole family. Take the kids on a 1 mile coastal loop that takes you through an Ancient Hawaiian ‘place of refuge’ – a place where people could go to escape the death penalty. Here you can see the remains of ancient Hawaiian heiau, a reconstructed village, and fish ponds. This is also a common place to see sea turtles on the beach. The cost of entry to the park is $5 for parking. Guided interpretive walks are available twice a day, or you can pick-up a brochure to learn more about the sights along the trail.
